Fast track to transforming Australian primary schools

Pasi Sahlberg

Foundations of lifelong learning are built during early childhood and primary education. Failure to do so often leads to significant difficulties in learning afterwards. Australian primary schools are good but they can be better. Because education systems change slowly, we need to explore innovation that would lead to practical transformation faster. In this presentation I suggest three concrete ways to make our primary schools fairer and better places to learn for all students. These three ideas are: Looping with students; Learning through health; and Play as learning. I will explain what each of these looks like in practice and argue that their immediate benefits can be significant compared to possible side effects.
