An introduction to our schools

West End State School

Principal – Mr Tony Maksoud

Our school motto, “We all smile in the same language,” captures the powerful sense of belonging you’ll experience the moment you step onto our campus. At West End State School, belonging goes beyond inclusion… it means being seen, known, valued and celebrated for who you are. It’s about feeling deeply connected, supported and empowered to thrive.

Leading well means placing relationships at the heart of everything we do, nurturing a culture built on kindness, compassion and trust. We deliberately cultivate strong, consistent connections with our learners to develop their emotional intelligence, and support their ability to self-regulate. We empower every learner to take ownership of their growth, face challenges with persistence and resilience, and inspire those around them.

We are also renowned for igniting a love of learning. With a deep focus on literacy and reading as gateways to understanding the world, combined with a commitment to rich, purposeful learning that challenges and excites. We endeavour to nurture curiosity, confidence and creativity in every child.

At West End State School, students actively shape their learning and support one another to succeed. Student voice drives our work, strengthened by structures and initiatives that empower meaningful action and impact. This is leading well in action – a vibrant, compassionate community where children lead confidently, and staff, students and families unite to create a rich and vibrant school community.

We invite you to experience the energy, connection and the love for learning… step into our amazing classrooms, meet our learners and leave inspired.

Somerville House Junior School

Junior School Head – Mrs Susan Clarke

At Somerville House Junior School, we believe education is a powerful expression of values lived each day—where excellence, creativity and integrity are not just aspirations but actions. As you step into our vibrant learning community, you’ll see how these values shape every interaction, every space, and every child.

Our journey into the Primary Years Programme (PYP) is deeply connected to who we are: a community committed to growing courageous, compassionate and capable learners. Inquiry is alive in our classrooms, framed by thoughtful pedagogy, strong relationships and an emerging understanding of the world through multiple perspectives.

Learning at Somerville is rich with purpose. Students are encouraged to wonder deeply, think critically and express themselves creatively. From the earliest years, our girls are invited to take ownership of their learning, make meaningful connections, and take action that reflects both heart and intellect.

You’ll see values in motion—students leading with empathy, collaborating with confidence, and striving for personal bests. Our staff walk alongside them, fostering agency, nurturing character and modelling a commitment to lifelong learning.

We invite you to walk with us, see our classrooms in action, and experience how we are embedding the PYP within a tradition of excellence—where every learner is known, challenged and celebrated.

St Catherine’s Primary

Principal – Mr Paul Mitchell

St Catherine’s Primary is a co-educational school with over 500 students, located in the leafy suburb of Wishart. It caters to students from Prep to Year 6. The school was established by the Presentation Sisters and is based on Nano Nagle’s vision of education for all. St Catherine’s is part of the Upper Mt Gravatt Wishart Catholic Parish and participates in social justice initiatives such as St Vincent de Paul and the Romero Centre.

The school’s Vision and Mission, known as the School Covenant, comprises Five Guiding Lights:

Living Faith involves daily opportunities to show compassion for the sick and the poor, making a difference to individuals or groups.

Quality Relationships are built on communication and honesty to help advance in life.

Potential of the Individual focuses on our core business of teaching and learning, encouraging openness to new experiences to become the best version of oneself. St Catherine’s is known for its own Model of Pedagogy GANAG which includes Visible Learning and HITS especially Explicit Teaching.

Global Stewardship highlights the importance of preserving the planet’s wonders. At St Catherine’s, sustainability programs inspired by *Laudato Si* teach students to care for the environment through activities like recycling and energy conservation, fostering a sense of shared responsibility for global well-being.

Power of Hope emphasises making the most of each day and recognising God’s presence, inspiring courage and justice to create positive change. Our school logo has a rainbow that symbolises hope after challenges and serves as a reminder of God’s promise to be by our side during difficult times.

These guiding lights and values form the model of action reflecting an image of Jesus seen daily within the community.
